Short version: Amazon's limit is 75 characters, spaces included. We checked 476 listings ranking in the top 10 organic results for 50 searches on October 22, 2026. 144 of them (30.3%) are over the limit. Titles do not drift just past 75: 268 sit at 61–75 characters and 99 run past 150. Only 12 are 76–100.

The rule is one line long. How sellers follow it is not. This page gives Amazon's wording, then the measured spread of titles on listings that currently rank.

What Amazon's rule says

From Amazon's Seller Central announcement on product titles (last updated June 10, 2026):

  • "Starting July 27, 2026, titles in all categories except for media will need to be 75 characters or less including spaces."
  • Titles still over 75 characters "will be updated to the AI recommendation gradually."
  • Brand owners get 14 days before implementation to review, modify and approve the AI-generated title.

So Amazon rewrites over-limit titles over time, not all at once. On October 22, 2026, almost three months after the start date, every over-limit listing below was still ranking in the top 10.

The data: how long are top-ranked titles?

MeasureResult
Titles over 75 characters144 of 476 (30.3%)
Over 100 characters132 (27.7%)
Over 150 characters99 (20.8%)
Median title length, all listings72 characters
Median length of the over-limit titles166 characters

Finding 1: titles are bimodal

Title lengthListings
31–6064
61–75268
76–10012
101–15033
151–20096
201+3

268 titles fit the limit with little room to spare. 99 ignore it by a wide margin. Almost nothing sits in between. A title that is 80 characters long is rare. Titles are either written to 75 or still carry the old 150–200 character keyword string.

For a seller, the practical read is that "slightly over" is not where the problem is. A title that needs a rewrite usually needs a rewrite of more than 75 characters' worth.

Finding 2: position in the top 10 shows no pattern

Share of titles over 75 characters by organic position: #1 26.5%, #2 32.7%, #3 22.4%, #4 36.7%, #5 38%, #6 30%, #7 24%, #8 26%, #9 28%, #10 38%. Each position has 49–50 listings, and the numbers move up and down. We do not claim a trend.

Finding 3: some categories break it more than others

Each category has 43–49 listings, so read this as direction, not a ranking.

Tools & Auto47.9%
Office40.8%
Sports38.8%
Kitchen34.1%

Beauty28.6%

Toys & Baby20.4%

Finding 4: titles are not the only rule listings miss

We scored every listing with the 14 rules of our free Listing Standards Check. 155 of 476 (32.6%) failed at least one of the four rules that come from Amazon's policy: title length, prohibited characters or promotional phrases, all-caps titles, and emoji in bullets. Title length accounts for most of it. No title had a prohibited character or promo phrase (0 of 476) or was all caps (0 of 476), and 15 of 475 listings (3.2%) had emoji in bullets.

Other rules in the check are our own thresholds, not Amazon's: 224 of 475 listings (47.2%) have fewer than 7 images, and 212 of 475 (44.6%) have a bullet under 150 characters. Do not read those as violations.

What to do with a title over 75 characters

  1. Count it. Paste the title into the free title character counter. Spaces count.
  2. Keep three things: brand, product type, and the one attribute a shopper compares on. The formula and a before-and-after rewrite are in our title optimization guide.
  3. Move the rest into Item Highlights. Amazon's announcement pairs the two: update the title to 75 characters and add Item Highlights. In our data, none of the 144 over-limit titles had it. See how 476 listings use Item Highlights.
  4. Keep dropped terms indexed. A keyword cut from the title still has a home in bullets and backend terms; see where each keyword goes.
  5. Edit in Manage All Inventory and check the live page again after 24–48 hours.
Example — over-limit title cut to 75

Before (148): YourBrand Insulated Water Bottle 32 oz Stainless Steel Leak Proof Wide Mouth BPA Free Sports Bottle for Gym Hiking Travel Cold 24 Hours Hot 12 Hours

After (66): YourBrand 32 oz Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle, Wide Mouth

The cut terms move to Item Highlights: "Leak-proof, BPA-free, Keeps drinks cold 24 hrs and hot 12 hrs, For gym, hiking, travel".

If you sell through Vendor Central, the same rule is in play; see what we found on Amazon-sold versus third-party titles.

How we ran this check

  • Searches: 50 amazon.com searches, 5 in each of 10 categories. Kitchen: air fryer, coffee maker, knife set, food storage containers, blender. Home: bed sheets, throw pillow covers, shower curtain, bath towels, storage bins. Beauty: vitamin c serum, sunscreen, shampoo, makeup brushes, hair dryer. Health: protein powder, multivitamin, electrolyte powder, massage gun, fish oil. Electronics: wireless earbuds, phone charger, usb c cable, bluetooth speaker, power bank. Pet: dog toys, cat litter, dog bed, cat tree, dog leash. Sports: yoga mat, water bottle, resistance bands, dumbbells, jump rope. Toys & Baby: building blocks, baby wipes, kids art supplies, stuffed animals, baby monitor. Office: notebook, gel pens, desk organizer, sticky notes, laptop stand. Tools & Auto: led light strip, cordless drill, car phone mount, tire inflator, extension cord.
  • Listings: the top 10 organic results per search, sponsored results excluded. 500 slots, 480 distinct listings, 476 retrieved.
  • Source: public Amazon product pages, collected October 22, 2026. The title is the one shown on the product page, without the variation name. Counting the variation name instead pushed the first pass to 76.5% over the limit; that figure was wrong and we discarded it.
  • Spot checks: four listings compared character for character against the live product page title.
  • Scoring: the title length rule in the Listing Standards Check, which flags more than 75 characters.

Not measured: whether Amazon had already rewritten any of these titles (we only see the title as it is today), and sales or conversion. Ranking in the top 10 says nothing about whether a shorter title would rank or convert better.
