Short version: We checked 476 listings ranking in the top 10 organic results for 50 Amazon searches on October 22, 2026. 52.5% fill Item Highlights to 100 or more of the 125 characters. 35.1% have none. 12.4% have highlights but leave room. And 0 of 144 listings with a title over 75 characters have Item Highlights at all.

Item Highlights is the line directly under an Amazon product title. Amazon added it alongside the 75-character title limit, as the place for the detail that no longer fits in the title.

What Amazon Item Highlights are

Amazon's Seller Central help page "Product title requirements and guidelines" (read October 22, 2026) states:

  • Length: Item Highlights add 125 characters of product detail.
  • Format: comma-separated phrases, not full sentences. Amazon's examples are materials and recommended use cases.
  • Placement: below the title, in search results and on the product detail page.
  • Access: "When you update your title to the 75-character limit, you will be able to add item highlights."
  • Editing: in Manage All Inventory. Changes take 24 to 48 hours to show.
Amazon's own example

Instead of a long title listing every compatible device, put "USB-C, PPS Support, Cable not included" in Item Highlights.

  • Among the 309 listings that have highlights, the median length is 116 characters.

  • The 59 listings under 100 characters have a median of 78. That leaves 47 characters unused on the typical one.

Finding 1: the title decides whether you have highlights

Title lengthListingsWith Item Highlights
75 characters or fewer332309 (93.1%)
Over 75 characters1440 (0%)

Not one over-limit title has Item Highlights. That matches Amazon's help page: the field opens when the title is at or under 75 characters. So 144 of the 167 listings without highlights are not skipping the field. They cannot use it until they shorten the title.

The other 23 have a compliant title and still leave the field empty.

Finding 2: most listings that can use it, fill it

250 of the 309 listings with highlights use 100 or more characters. Sellers who shortened their titles moved the detail into highlights instead of dropping it.

The short ones read like a fragment. Three examples from the data:

  • "Automatic Shut Off, LED Light" (29 characters)
  • "Toy For Dogs - Chewing, Playing" (31 characters)
  • "Omega 3 Supplements - Supports Heart Health" (43 characters)

Each one leaves more than 80 characters for materials, sizes, compatibility or use cases.

Finding 3: categories differ

Share of listings with 100+ characters of highlights, and with none. Each category has 43–49 listings, so read this as direction, not a ranking.

Sports4920.4%61.2%

Sports has the most listings without highlights (61.2%). In the same data, 38.8% of Sports titles are over 75 characters.

Split by who sells the listing, Amazon-sold (1P) listings with a compliant title leave the field empty more often than third-party ones: 16.8% against 1.8%.

How to fill your Item Highlights

  1. Count your title. If it is over 75 characters, the field stays closed. Use the free title character counter.
  2. Cut the title to brand, product type and the one attribute that matters most. Our title optimization guide has the order.
  3. Move what you cut into Item Highlights as comma-separated phrases. Our guide to where to put keywords in a listing shows which terms belong in which field.
  4. Aim for 100–125 characters. That is where the median top-10 listing sits (116).
  5. Lead with what a shopper compares on: material, size or capacity, compatibility, what is included.
  6. Check back after 48 hours. Amazon says that is how long the change can take to show.
  7. Then check the rest of the copy. Bullets carry the detail highlights cannot; see how to write Amazon bullet points.
