Short version: Amazon Shop Direct shows other merchants’ products, taken from their own websites, in Amazon search and in its AI shopping assistant. It is free to merchants today. If you already sell on Amazon, your DTC site can now sit next to your Amazon listing, and a competitor’s site can sit next to both. Check price and content parity, decide opt-in or opt-out on purpose, and tag the traffic.
Amazon’s own page describes Shop Direct as a free way for merchants to make their products discoverable by Amazon’s customers. Most coverage asks whether off-Amazon brands should join. This article asks a different question: what changes for a brand that is already on Amazon?
What Shop Direct is
- Where it shows up. Amazon shows select products it does not sell in search results and in its AI shopping assistant. Amazon’s Shop Direct page still names the assistant Rufus; Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026 (see what Alexa for Shopping is).
- Two paths for the shopper. Visit the merchant’s site, or, for eligible products, tap Buy for Me. Amazon’s AI then completes the purchase on the merchant’s site using the shopper’s Amazon address and payment details, after the shopper confirms the order on an Amazon checkout page (Amazon, TechCrunch).
- Who runs the sale. The merchant stays seller of record. Shipping, delivery, returns, exchanges, and customer service go through the merchant’s own processes.
- Availability. U.S. customers.
How it got here
- 2025: Testing begins. TechCrunch dates the Shop Direct beta to February 2025. Other outlets give a different month for the Buy for Me beta, so the exact Buy for Me launch date is not confirmed here.
- January 2026: Modern Retail reports that some brands found their products listed without having opted in. Amazon calls Shop Direct and Buy for Me tests and says it removes businesses promptly when they opt out.
- March 11, 2026: Amazon opens Shop Direct to product feeds from third-party syndicators (Feedonomics, Salsify, CedCommerce). Amazon’s announcement cites more than 100 million products from more than 400,000 merchants, and tens of millions of those products available through Buy for Me. An Amazon merchant portal is listed as coming soon; this article could not confirm it has launched.
Where do the product details come from? Per Amazon’s page, from merchants directly or from publicly available information on merchant websites, refreshed regularly. The merchant is responsible for accuracy. Amazon decides whether, when, and how to display a product, and may combine descriptions when several merchants sell the same item.
What changes if you already sell on Amazon
1. Your own website can appear in Amazon’s results
If you sell only part of your catalog on Amazon, products you do not list there can now be discoverable on Amazon through your site. Whether yours appears is Amazon’s call. Amazon states it decides whether, when, and how to display products.
2. Your Amazon listing and your DTC site get compared
A shopper can see both. A price gap, a different title, or a different pack size between the two now sits one scroll apart. This is a risk of inconsistency, not a ranking factor Amazon has documented. We have no evidence that Shop Direct data feeds Amazon’s ranking, and Amazon says it does not use Buy for Me transaction information for sourcing, inventory, or pricing decisions in its store, including private brands.
The practical risk is simpler. Buyers see the lower price. Buyers see conflicting claims. Your Buy Box price and your DTC price are both public (see how the Buy Box works).
3. Competitors’ off-Amazon sites can appear in your search results
Brands that never sold on Amazon can now show up for the queries you target. Expect more results in the same slot on the page. How often this happens in your category is unmeasured here; check your own top queries on mobile and desktop.
4. Stale DTC data becomes an Amazon problem
Modern Retail reported merchants cancelling and refunding Buy for Me orders for items that were out of stock or no longer sold. If Amazon reads your site, your site’s stock status, prices, and descriptions are the source. Fix them there.
5. Channel conflict
Modern Retail also reported brands worried about wholesale agreements. Some retail partners restrict Amazon-related sales. Read those contracts before deciding.
Measure it: the UTM tag
Amazon appends &utm_source=AMZN_US_ShopDirect to links that send shoppers to a merchant’s site, so the traffic source appears as AMZN_US_ShopDirect. In GA4, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and filter Session source on that value. Amazon says it does not collect data on how shoppers interact with your site afterward, so your analytics is the only record.
Buy for Me orders arrive as orders on your own checkout, not as Amazon orders. Amazon may give you a unique, secure forwarding email per order; your messages are forwarded to the customer and replies come back to you.
Amazon listing: 2-pack, $24.99, in stock. DTC site: 3-pack, $29.99, one variant marked out of stock.
A shopper who sees both cannot tell if the price is fair. Align pack sizes and names, set stock status on the DTC site to match reality, and decide on purpose whether the DTC price sits above, at, or below Amazon.
The fee question
Per Amazon’s page: merchants do not currently pay, and Amazon gets no referral fee on Buy for Me purchases. The same page says, “We continue to experiment with ways for merchants to participate.” Treat zero fees as the current state, not a promise. Put a re-check date in your calendar.
Opt-in or opt-out checklist
Participation works by default: Amazon can take public product information from your website, and you opt out if you do not want it. To join through a feed, contact your account representative at Feedonomics, Salsify, or CedCommerce, or email [email protected]. For opt-outs and feedback, Amazon’s page lists [email protected] and a two-business-day response; Amazon’s news post points to the Shop Direct Merchant page, and Amazon has told the press that [email protected] handles opt-outs.
- ☐ Prices on your DTC site match your Amazon prices, or the gap is on purpose
- ☐ Titles, pack sizes, and claims match your Amazon listing
- ☐ Stock status on your site is accurate and updates fast
- ☐ You can fulfill, answer, and refund an order that arrives through Buy for Me
- ☐ No retail or wholesale contract restricts this kind of listing
- ☐ Password-protected or wholesale-only products are not publicly priced on your site
- ☐
AMZN_US_ShopDirectis saved as a GA4 report or segment - ☐ You searched your top 10 queries on Amazon and noted who appears
- ☐ A re-check is scheduled in 90 days (fees and terms can change)
If you fail the first four, fix them or opt out. If you pass all of them, staying in is a free test.
How this fits the search stack
Shop Direct sits beside, not inside, the ranking stack described in how Amazon search works. The A9/A10 system, COSMO, and Alexa for Shopping still decide how your Amazon listing is found. Shop Direct adds outside products to the results a shopper can see. For the assistant’s side of this, see what Rufus was.
Keep the Amazon side clean
OptimalCentral tracks your Amazon price, Buy Box, and listing changes for your ASINs and competitors, so you know what the Amazon side says before you compare it with your DTC site. It does not read your DTC site. Ossy audits your listing; you decide what to change, with a 14-day free trial.
See Product Monitor → Start free trial →Next: run the listing audit checklist so the Amazon listing is the version you want shoppers to compare against.
Frequently asked questions
What is Amazon Shop Direct?
Amazon’s program that shows products Amazon does not sell, from other merchants’ own websites, in Amazon search and its AI shopping assistant. Shoppers visit the merchant’s site or, for eligible items, use Buy for Me to purchase without leaving Amazon. The merchant ships and handles returns and customer service.
What is Amazon Buy for Me?
Amazon’s AI-assisted purchasing feature. The shopper taps Buy for Me and confirms the order on an Amazon checkout page. Amazon’s AI then completes the purchase on the merchant’s own site using the shopper’s Amazon address and payment details. The merchant fulfills the order.
Does Amazon Shop Direct cost merchants anything?
Not today, per Amazon’s Shop Direct page: merchants do not currently pay, and Amazon takes no referral fee on Buy for Me purchases. Amazon also says it continues to experiment with ways for merchants to participate, so the terms can change.
How do I opt out of Amazon Shop Direct?
Email [email protected], per Amazon’s Shop Direct page, which promises a response within two business days. Amazon’s news post also points to the Shop Direct Merchant page, and Amazon has told the press that [email protected] works for opt-outs. Keep a copy of the request and re-check your products afterward.
How do I track Shop Direct traffic in Google Analytics?
Look for the source AMZN_US_ShopDirect. Amazon appends utm_source=AMZN_US_ShopDirect to the links it sends to merchant sites. Filter your traffic-source report on that value. Amazon says it does not collect data on how shoppers interact with your site afterward.
Is Amazon Shop Direct the same as Alexa for Shopping?
No. Shop Direct is the program that makes outside merchants’ products discoverable. Alexa for Shopping, formerly Rufus, is one place those products can appear. Amazon’s Shop Direct page still says Rufus; the rename took effect May 13, 2026.
Should a brand that already sells on Amazon opt out of Shop Direct?
Not by default. Opt out if your DTC data does not match Amazon, or a retail partner restricts Amazon-related sales. Stay in if your DTC site is accurate, you can fulfill, and you want free discovery. Run the checklist in this article and re-check each quarter.
